Why SUNOD will keep me up at night…

Sharing is Caring!

Sunod* is a Filipino Horror or Scary Movie directed by Carlo Ledesma and written by Anton Santamaria, who also wrote the screenplay for movies like Buy Bust and Seklusyon.

Sunod recently became available on the streaming platform, Netflix and is currently #10 in the ‘Top in the Philippines’ list.👏🏻

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS.

Watching scary movies is how I bond with my daughter.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not because I think they’re not scary.

On the contrary, I think they are super scary!😳 What freaks me out the most is that it’s local, so that makes it frightening.😨 The thought that it happens so close to home freaks me the f*** out.

I don’t mind Samara or Sadako wreaking havoc in the US or Japan. I’m miles away.

But, the Undin is, up to this day, the reason why I can’t pee in the middle of the night.🙅🏻‍♀️🚽 It came out of the freaking toilet and dissolved people with its saliva!😱

Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles is the reason why I love Boy Bawang. Especially when I was preggers with Bashang; and it wasn’t because I had cravings. It’s for protection.🤞🏻

So watching Filipino scary movies for me is a lot.😨 I don’t take it lightly.

SUNOD streaming on Netflix

I saw SUNOD was streaming on Netflix, it’s in the ‘Popular’ list today, I watched the trailer and was like, “ooohhhh, scary!”, so I asked eldest daughter, C, to watch it with me.

We always, ALWAYS, only watch scary movies in the afternoon. That way, there will be enough time to watch a funny movie after and keep our over active imagination from giving us nightmares.😅

So, how was it?

It was okay. I’d give it 3⭐️ out of 5⭐️, because it set the mood for us, it started off really good and then things kind of went south after the spider like lady came into the picture.

Would I watch it again? Maybe. Although it’s not like one of those movies that you’d actually want to watch again, like Feng Shui or some of the Shake, Rattle and Roll films. I enjoyed it, yes, but it’s not something I’d seek to watch again. If I saw it playing on tv and there’s nothing else to watch, I’d watch it again.

The Cinematography – Awesome.

As what is usual in scary movies, it’s supposed to be dark in certain scenes to give it a scarier feel. Sunod definitely delivered. I actually felt goosebumps without jump scares happening or excessive loud sounds to signal a scary scene. You know, from what is common – yung and lakas ng sounds, para magulat ka, pero di naman scary (suddenly loud sounds meant to scare you but the scene isn’t scary at all).

The Actors – Excellent.

I mean, come on. Carmina Villaroel, Mylene Dizon, Susan Africa? They’re all great actors in their own right and they definitely brought their A-game to this film.

I’ve never even heard of Krystal Brimner to be honest – (I don’t watch tv and even if I do, I’m a Kapuso 😁), but oh my gosh, she was so great!🤯 She gave the characters of Anelle and Nerissa such depth, it was so believable.👏🏻

The Story – Super creepy and scary, it set the mood for us for sure.

We were so ready to be scared.

I liked that they built the relationship between Anelle and Olivia just enough to be relevant without it being dragging. Then again, I’m a mom, so maybe I knew all too well what a mom is willing to do to ensure her child’s well being. Even if that means hurting them to protect them, you know?🤷🏻‍♀️ Moms know.🙋🏻‍♀️

Then we get to the ghost scene, when Olivia met Nerissa for the first time and it was scary as shiz.😨 Not over the top, no sudden loud noises, there was already an eerie atmosphere, and that already set the mood.

Then that almost ending.

What a disappointment.😞

If there’s one thing I dislike about movies, it’s when they don’t tie up loose ends. I don’t mean like Inception kind of loose end.🚫

I mean like, I’d at least like to know WHAT and WHY.🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s not so hard, right?🤷🏻‍♀️ Sunod failed to answer WHAT and WHY for me.

So, WHAT?

WHAT is that spider lady thingy supposed to be?😨

\"\"

WHAT is the purpose of the killing (Survival? Basic need? Just for laughs?).🤷🏻‍♀️

Is that based off of a Filipino folk lore?😨

If so, HOW DO YOU KILL IT or at the very least keep it at bay? Boy Bawang like the Tiktik???😨

Where does it come from?😨

Like I know, the creature in Jeepers Creepers only comes out every 23 years to hunt and that they hunt people based on the smell of their fear or if there’s any physical attribute they like, for Dairy, it was his blue eyes. What is this spider like lady’s motivation? So, stuff like that are what I’d like to know.

Why SUNOD?

I seriously thought because it was because the ghost followed Olivia, played by Carmina Villaroel, and then possessed her daughter, played by Krystal Brimner.

Then Perla, played by Susan Africa, was like “Ikaw na ang susunod.” (“You’re next”), to Olivia and I was like, WHAAAAT.🤯

Another WHY.

So, if Karen Liboro, played by Mylene Dizon, ends up being the spider like lady, why is she still after Olivia?🤷🏻‍♀️ Is Olivia like “The Chosen One”?🤔

I NEED CLOSURE.

So, I Googled “spider like lady in Filipino Folklore” and I got nothing.😢

On the other hand, I now know what a Sigbin or Sigben is. So add that to the list of things that will keep me up at night.😳

Have you seen Sunod on Netflix?🤔

How did you find it?🤔

Anything particular you want to talk about?🤔
